Computing in English schools is - as in many countries - in a dismal state. In many schools, computing is not taught anymore, having been replaced with instruction in text processing and other office products. Even when computing is taught, it is often not delivering what we would like to see. Yet, there are options other than wearing kids down with PowerPoint. In this talk, I will summarise the current state of affairs, report on efforts to improve the situation, and then introduce one initiative in some more detail: Greenfoot, a programming environment aimed at bringing programming back into schools.
